Today, the Voltaire Society held a ‘flash mob’ meeting to discuss issues of the day. Understandably, a good deal of attention was devoted to examining the response of the authorities to the coronavirus pandemic, and strong views were expressed. Conversation moved on to other topics, including the US Presidential election, the Donald ( a Voltaire standard ) and, by way of contrast, the findings of the Windrush Enquiry. Across this range of issues, there was a common underlying theme: the importance of public scrutiny of those in power.
