The Year 8 football team played in the final on Monday against St Ninians. The Ballakermeen lads started strongly, launching two quick attacks early on which allowed Callan to immediately apply pressure on the opposition defence and goalkeeper.
St Ninians soon began to find their rhythm, with a strong central midfielder skillfully orchestrating play and putting pressure back onto our defensive line. However, Owen, Sam and Kieran did a fantastic job holding off the St Ninians forwards and maintaining a solid defensive presence.
The final also saw two debut starts for the A team - Bobbie and Buddie. Bobbie, who recently joined us from St Ninians, showed great composure and determination throughout the match, unfazed by the opposition players or supporters while constantly applying pressure with his skill and work rate. Buddie also had an outstanding game, bringing strength, precise passing and flair on the ball.
Captain Marcus demonstrated great leadership and ability in goal, making several excellent saves while communicating brilliantly with the team. Despite this, St Ninians continued to apply pressure and managed to score two goals before half-time.
The second half saw Ballakermeen come out with even greater determination. A strong stint from Billy and Jacob, who both got stuck in from the get go. Billy putting in some deadly crosses and Jacob providing additional stability in midfield. Finley showcased his skill on the wing with quick, short passing that helped create more attacking opportunities. Further excellent saves from Marcus and strong central midfield play from Charlie allowed Ballakermeen to push forward, eventually putting Bobbie through on goal to score and bring the game back to 2–1.
The match remained intense, with both teams creating multiple chances. With just three minutes remaining, excellent ball movement and link-up play between Buddie, Charlie and Harry put Bobbie through on goal once again to level the score.
In the final two minutes, the lads pushed hard for a winner. However, from the restart we were forced back into our own half, and a small defensive error allowed St Ninians to score the decisive goal in the last minute of the game.
It was too difficult to choose a player of the match, so this is shared between Buddie and Bobbie!
Although the boys gave their all and showed an outstanding level of commitment throughout the match, I was even more impressed with the way they conducted themselves. Their behaviour was impeccable and they represented Ballakermeen High School with great pride. It has been a pleasure to coach this group for the second year in a row, and I look forward to seeing what they can achieve next year.
